1. American Citizens, having long enjoyed a history of bearing arms for the reasons of sporting, sustenance, and personal security, shall not be unreasonably restricted from owning and bearing arms suitable for such purposes.
2. Congress shall have the power to establish reasonable restrictions upon the types of arms, ammunition, and accessories permitted to the citizenry.
3. This amendment shall take force one year from ratification. Once ratified, congress must, within that period, establish such initial restrictions required to implement Section 2 of this amendment. No person shall be required to surrender any arms under Section 2 of this amendment without just and fair compensation.

I'm not a lawyer, nor a legislator... this is a proposed pattern only, a first draft.

(You can certainly guess what prompted this)

My wife just called; she found our sun conure, Pumpkin, dead inside her favorite hiding box.

Goodbye, my precious pretty pirate parrot!

Retiring This Icon

It is with great joy that I retire my 'Marriage Equality' icon. Thanks SCOTUS - or at least 5 of you - for doing the right thing!

Good bye, mom.

Yesterday morning, at 9:40 mountain time, my mom finally passed away.

Sadly, 'she who bore me' was not killed in a freestyle match (she was a bit of a Trekkie!), but instead finally was brought down by a stroke in her spine... She was too stubborn to let her cancer take her! Despite her stubbornness, when she finally decided it was time she passed quite peacefully.

Thanks, mom. I think you did a damned fine job raising us kids.

No, not California... My ex-wife lives in (slightly) red New Mexico, however, with her wife and family. Tomorrow she will be sworn-in as a US Citizen!

As a condition of sending her a copy of our divorce files for her application, she has promised to vote Dem until the GOP is out of power.

As a (soon-to-be former) Mexican and a lesbian, I think I can safely count on her to keep that promise.

Congrats, Angel!

The 2014 Garden is Planted!

3 types of tomato, 2 zucchini, 4 colors of bell peppers, and a jalapeno in the raised beds; some more delicate herbs in hanging pots.

Sadly, this means my contributions to all of this season's encampment pot lucks will be Zucchini d'Morte again.

"Winter" is over, here in SoCal...

I know anecdotes are not data, and that weather is not climate, BUT...

For the first time in the decade that I've lived out in the "No, Oh, NO!" we had not one single morning of frost. Not one. The lows usually dip into the high 20's at my place in the deepest winter, this past winter they never got below the mid-30's. Not once.

I've also been monitoring my solar production... daily peaks in January were right around 20 kWh, now in March they're over 30! I fully expect our next electric bill to start dropping into the negatives - current bill showed us using about 2.5 kWh net every day, about 1/10 of the previous year's usage, and I expect April and May (with lots of sun, no need to run the AC all day long) to push us well into the 'net generation' column!

Not Exactly a Review...

Because a review would be more in-depth.

Over the weekend I finally got to break in my copy of "Machine of Death - The Game of Creative Assassination". This is 'based on' the David Malki ! (of "Wondermark" fame) edited collection of short stories about people who know exactly, but not exactly enough, how they will die. The classic example is "Old Age"; which could mean a heart attack at 90, or being hit by an out of control car this afternoon, if the car was being driven by an octagenarian!

Your job is to kill a series of targets using the resources at hand, in the manner that the machine has predicted for them (since the machine is NEVER wrong). Having a victim with the death of "Dead Moose" and resources that included "Something Round", for example, led me to suggest dropping a dead moose on the victim from a hot-air balloon... You get the idea!

Fast-paced, funny, and fun!

It's Been Forever Since I Posted One...

...but here are my recent readings and planned readings:

Now that I've gone electronic, I find I have  LOT of things to catch up on!

John Scalzi's Old Man's War universe.
Charlie Stross' Laundry series, along with Saturn's Children and Neptune's Brood
Iain M. Banks Culture...

So, f-list, what else should I be getting into?

899

If all goes well, and according to plan, that's how many work-days I have left in my career. Apparently I missed the 1000 day mark I had intended to commemorate, and was just too busy yesterdayto mark 900.

Not that I'm counting, of course!

Best Line From Today's Emails...

I was a backer for David Malki !'s "Machine of Death" game on Kickstarter. So, today I got an email letting me know that the shipping schedule is running late as he waits for the games to clear Customs:

"...perhaps I should have expected that trying to import 32 tons of something called "Machine of Death" might prompt some additional scrutiny???"

My recent discovery:

My (queen-sized) bed is too small to contain me, my wife, a cocker spaniel, a terrier-mix, a smallish cat, and a Maine Coon-mix.

My bedroom is too small to contain a bigger bed.

Good thing that the birds don't sleep with us!

Important Productivity Tip:

Don't go to the eye doctor on your lunch break.

I'm currently sitting in a dark office, with the brightness on my monitor turned waaaayyyyy down due to dilated pupils, and I still can't focus clearly on anything, at any distance.

Harry Reid Doesn't Read This...

...so he won't receive my filibuster reform proposal (which shall, as Gaul, into 3 parts be divided):

1 - Each Senator is given ONE filibuster at the start of the session. Use it or lose it, you can't save them up between sessions.

2 - The Senator can use it to delay any ONE thing... use it to put a "hold" on a nominee, for example, and it's gone.

3 - A filibuster no longer requires a supermajority to end it, it requires 40 votes to sustain it instead. If, at any time, the filibustering party doesn't have 40 votes on the Senate floor, or available within 30 minutes, the filibusteris ended and Congress moves on.

So, the minority party has to decide what's important, rather than simply obstructing everything. You don't think Saul Alinsky should sit on the SCOTUS? Fine, filibuster him! But that will mean you might not be able to filibuster the "Helping People Not Starve Act of 2015" later.

There we go, wrapped up in a neat little bow! Minority power to block truly egregious things is maintained, but the business of running the country is permitted to go on. I Hate Mondays...

...which start for me on Fridays.

Monday is when most of our export orders ship, tripling the paperwork as I have to make sure the correct Sicherheitsdatenblatt or Risalah Data Keselamatan are matched to the right orders.

At least the day will end with stabbing people, soaking in the jacuzzi, and then a good nightcap!
